**What Is The Jigsaw Classroom?** The jigsaw [Classroom](http://www.flipclass.com) is _research based cooperative learning technique_ that was invented by Elliot Aronson and his students at the University of Texas and University of California in the 1970’s. This technique helps student create his or her own learning. In order to better understand this technique, it is best to understand the process used to carry out the technique.

**The Jigsaw Technique** The 11 steps below provide a better understanding and application of the jigsaw technique. _*Step 1: *_Divide students in a group of 5-6 students. _*Step 2: *_Appoint a group leader. _*Step 3: *_Divide the lesson in to 5-6 segments. For example, if you want to teach a history lesson about Gandhi, one can divide the lesson in to 5-6 stand along segments like (1) Early Life & Background, (2) English Barrister, (3) Activist in South Africa, (4) Initial Struggle for Independence, (5) Satyagraha & Quit India Movement, and (6) Assassination. _*Step 4: *_Assign each student to learn and study one segment. _*Step 5: *_Allocate time for research and study on the topic. _*Step 6: *_Form expert groups by bringing together students from each group that were assigned the same topic.

_*Step 7: *_Allow the expert groups to discuss their findings on the topic, and highlight the important points from their findings. _*Step 8: *_Bring back students to their original groups. _*Step 9: *_Ask each student to present his or her segment to the group. Encourage other group members to ask questions for clarification. **Step 10:** Observe each group, and assist them through any troubles. **Step 11:** At the end of the session, quiz or test the students on the material.
